Digital payments: the future of cross-border transactions

Regulatory initiatives aimed at making international payments faster, more transparent, and accessible
10.03.2025

The implementation of the Instant Payment Regulation marks another step toward the European Union's goal of creating a single digital payments market characterised by modern, secure, and cost-effective financial solutions. Starting in 2025, offering and accepting instant transfers will become mandatory, enabling faster fund transfers between countries in the SEPA area.

Additionally, as outlined in the G20 Action Plan, efforts continue to enhance the speed, transparency, and accessibility of international payments to non-SEPA countries.

During the 2024 Salone dei Pagamenti, Andrea Cogerino, Payments Cash Management & Open Banking, GTB, from Intesa Sanpaolo's IMI Corporate & Investment Banking Division, discussed the evolution of payments in Europe and the global challenges of the coming months. In his presentation, he emphasized Intesa Sanpaolo's role in this context, focusing on its multi-year program to align with new standards and its strategic alliances to expand the range of international payment services.
